Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on October 31, 1951.

Brunsbüttelkoog developed after the opening of the canal from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea at the end of the 19th century. The wavy bend symbolises the canal. The spade symbolises the digging of many small canals and ditches to drain the country, to make it suitable for agriculture. The anchor indicates the importance of shipping for the city.

The image below, showing local emergency money from 1921 shows different arms, also showing the importance of the Nordseekanal for the village and in the base the arms of Ditmarschen.

These arms are based on the seal of the local village and parish dating from 1316, and showing the local patron saint, St. James (Jacobus). A second seal from 1609 showed the same composition. His image is was also used on the arms of the Amt Kirchspiellandgemeinde Brunsbüttel.
