Wappen von Burgbernheim

Official blazon

(de) Gespalten; vorne in Gold ein halber schwarzer Adler am Spalt; hinten geteilt von Rot und Gold; oben eine silberne Burg, unten ein links gewendeter schwarzer Bär.

Origin/meaning

Burgbernheim received town rights in 1623 and at the same time the use of the above arms started. These were allegedly granted already in 1128, but the documents were falsified in 1623.

The eagle is the symbol of the Holy Roman Empire and the left half shows two canting elements; a castle (Burg) and a bear (Bär, Bern). In 1767 the shield is covered by a helmet and shows a climbing bear as a crest. These disappeared again in 1819. The arms have not changed since.
