Origin/meaning

In the centre of the shield is the cross of Christ, superimposed on the rainbow colours. The rich colours symbolize the multi-cultural environment in the diocese. People come from different cultural backgrounds and yet belong to the same Catholic church, member of the body of Christ.

The heads of cheetahs at the base of the shield represent the area of Bloemfontein known in Sesotho as Mangaung the place of the cheetahs.

The Basotho hat above the shield calls to mind of the local Sesotho culture. The Basotho hat is a common cultural element in the area. The majority of the people in the Archdiocese are Sotho speaking. The symbol of the Basotho hat represents the aspirations and commitment to express the Gospel message in the idiom of the local Sesotho culture.
