Arms of Bytom

Origin/meaning

The arms of the city (German name Beuthen) combine a miner with the eagle derived from the arms of Upper Silesia. Mining was very important here already in medieval times, and the composition of miner and eagle already appeared on the seal of the city known from 1330. Later mining became less important and the city only used the eagle. In the 19th century coal mining became very important again and the old arms were restored. Hupp showed the arms in differnet colours, but with the correct colours of the eagle:
