Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 8, 1997.

Although only recently recognized, the Campione coat of arms has been used since the beginning of the 20th century.

The arms indicate that Campione belonged from the 840 to 1798 to the fiefdom of the Abbey of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan. This is symbolised by the crosier for the Abbey and the whip for St. Ambrosius. The whip symbolises the Arians defeated by him, as a staunch defender of faith both through writings and with the word.

Many artists originate from the town, who travelled and worked all over Europe. Pier Antonio Solari, for example, worked on the main tower of the Kremlin in Moscow. These talented artists of the bas-relief and fresco arts, chose the humble snail as their symbol, because their habit was to move away from their own country, bringing with them the family and every possessions they could carry, leaving, thanks to their artistic value, the imprint of their journey just like the snail's trail. The animal was also chosen for its cochlea, the spiral guide which alludes to the use of ingenuity and imagination, an essential activity of the artists.
