Origin/meaning

Bishop Carl K. Moeddel has selected for his coat of arms those symbols with special meaning to his life and priesthood. The field of the shield is red in the center, a color symbolic of the Holy Spirit, divine fire and love.

On this is the chalice and host, signifying Charles Borromeo, who is the bishop's principal patron saint. Also on the red center is a lance and shield, as well as a banner charged with a dove, which signifies Michael the Archangel. Bishop Moeddel chose Michael the Archangel as his patron saint for his Confirmation.

The upper and lower portions of the shield are blue, symbolic of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom Bishop Moeddel, ordained to the priesthood on her feast (Aug. 16), has dedicated his priesthood. Upper emblems are the fleur-de-lia. which is a conventional symbol of the Annunciation.

The upper emblems also include the crescent moon symbolozing the Virgin Mother, the reflected glory of the Sun of Righteousness, Jesus Christ. The lower emblem is the heraldic rose, a common symbol of Our Lady.

Bishop Moeddel's motto, "Be Reconciled," is from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Church at Corinth, Chapter 5, Verse 20.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
