The town is in the ancient parish of Magheross, in the barony of Farney. In the arms the tower of Saint Finbarr’s Church, Magheross forms the centrepiece. The barony of Farney is named for the “Fir Fearnmhaighe” or “People of the Alder Plain”. They are represented by the two sprigs of Alder. | |||
The rock that names the town is represented by the mount in base. The fretty pattern of the mount recalls the world famous manufacture of Carrickmacross Lace. | |||
The chief bears two issuant fleurs de lys. These appear on the town’s tollhouse, associated with the market of Carrickmacross. The arms are completed by the red hand indicating the town’s situation in Ulster. | |||
The motto translates as: “Diplomacy is better than conflict”. It is taken from Seanfhocla Uladh collected by Farneyman Henry Morris. | |||
