Origin/meaning

The arms are basically identical to the coat of arms of Portugal, since that city was conquered by King John I of Portugal on 21 August 1415. The city chose to join Spain when Portugal again became independent at the end of the Iberian Union. The difference is that the tower in the center chief of the Portuguese arms is placed in the point.
