The stars are derived from the Australian flag. The large star on the left has strangely 8 points, whereas on the national flag, it has 7 points and is known as the Commonwealth Star, one for each State and one more to represent the Territories of Australia. The other stars in the sky are reminiscent of the Southern Cross, which is also on the national flag, but again, the number of points is different to the national flag.

The waters represent the Indian Ocean. The stylised tree and hands are derived from the Christmas Island Phosphates motto 'Helping the World to Grow.'
