Origin/meaning

Clenze is first mentioned in 956 and already in the early Middle Ages it had its own council. The oldest seal of the council dates from the late 16th century. It already shows the present arms, being the lion of the Dukes of Lüneburg, rulers since 1289 over Clenze, as well as the key of the monastery of Corvey. The monastery held the religious rights over the town since 1150.
