Origin/meaning

The County Pyrmont was a county located in the present-day German state of Hessen. It existed as an independent territory from the 12th century until 1848 (from 1807-1848 also indicted as Principality-County), when it was merged with the Principality of Waldeck to the Principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont. Capital was the city of Bad Pyrmont.

The arms show a red cross, derived from the arms of the medieval Counts of Pyrmont (1194-1494), has been used to indicate the territory ever since.
