CRES

County : Primorje-Gorski Kotar County

Arms of Cres

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially adopted on January 2, 1995.

The arms of Cres originate from the 14th century and show a golden panther. The modern shield is based on the historical examples preserved mainly as carved in stone in several places in Cres. A legend told by the Cres inhabitants explains the use of the panther as symbolic for themselves - tame and lovely (and ready to work hard) as young horses they become dangerous as lions and eagles when they are provoked.

Under Venetian rule (until 1792) the arms were a silver horse on a green field.
