===Origin/meaning===

====Origin/meaning====
Dannenberg was already a city in the 13th century and capital of the county of the same name. The Counts of Dannenberg used as arms a canting pine tree (Tanne=pine tree), held by a lion. The county was sold to Otto von Lüneburg in 1303. The second lion may thus be the lion of the Welfen family, from which the Counts of Lüneburg descended. The arms are first seen on a seal from the middle of the 14th century. All later seals and images showed the present arms, but the canting hill (Berg=mountain) was added only in the 16th or 17th century. Ahrens showed the arms with a silver shielh, [[Otto Hupp|Hupp]] with a rather unusual pine tree (see images below).
