===Origin/meaning===
The golden cross is taken from the arms of pope [[John Paul II]], who created the diocese of Knoxville in 1988. The three red crosslets symbolize that Knoxville is one of the three dioceses that serve Tennessee.

The 1st and 3rd quarters signify the geography of East-Tennessee. The silver charge with the points has three peaks to symbolize that the diocese of Knoxville is composed of three vicariates (now four deaneries). The 4th quarter gives the water, symbolizing the Tennessee River that has its headwaters near Knoxville.

The dogwood flower in the 2nd quarter is the dominating blossom in this region. In the 4th quarter is a railroad trestel to honor the Irish trestle builders who brought the faith to this region.

The colours of the quarters are those of the flag of Tennessee and the USA.
