DIOCESE OF MIDDELBURG (Dioecesis Middelburgensis)

Country : Netherlands
Denomination : Roman Catholic

Established : 1559
Abolished 1603
Titular See since 2018

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The diocese probably used the arms of the former Middelburg Abbey, paly of six, Or and Gules. These arms were at least used as part of the arms of the three bishops of Middelburg. There is, however, no proof that the diocese itself used these arms. The bishops were also Abbot of the Abbey until 1574.

Only the first bishop resided in the city, the 2nd and 3rd were appointed, but never went to the city, which at the time had a Protestant government.
