DIOCESE OF PORTLAND (Dioecesis Portlandensis)
Country : United States
Denomination : Roman Catholic
Established : 1853
Official blazon
Azure, semée of pine cones, a cross moline argent.
Origin/meaning
The ´semeé of golden pine cones´ is a variation of the Royal French arms, where the fleur-the-lys were replaced by pine cones to signify that Maine is the ´Pine State´. It was under a warrant of the French King that the first settlements were attempted in what is now Maine by the DeMonts who founded a small colony on Saint Croix Island in the Saint Croix River in 1604.
The silver cross moline on blue is taken from the Dukes of Portland.
