Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 15, 2001.

The arms are based on the logo used by the Association for some time. The field of the shield is white, symbolizing many sails. At the base are wavy blue and white horizontal bars, representing the sea and other waterways. Filling the central part of the shield, in the background, is a ship’s wheel or helm, referring to sailing yachts and the control of sea-going vessels. The sail features a blue wheel, representing motion and the circle of life. As the Disabled Sailing Association of British Columbia allows people with significant disabilities to experience the freedom and independence of sailing, the wheel also serves to represent the spokes of a wheelchair.

The motto reflects the spirit of the Association and determination of its members. It is an English translation of the motto of the Honourable Henry Pybus “Budge” Bell-Irving (1913-2002), the former Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia.
