The arms are based on the oldest seals of the village. The oldest seal dates from the early 14<sup>th</sup> century and shows already a tower, wall and gate. Above the wall the image of St. Mary, the local patron saint was seen. After 1557 she was replaced by a shield with the lion of Nassau, as the city was again acquired by the Counts of Nassau.
