Origin/meaning

The Duchy of Zara (now Croatia), was created in 1797 when it was acquired by Austria-Hungary. The territory had a complicated history and belonged to Byzantium, Venice, Hungary and Turkey prior to 1797. The arms show the H. Chrysogonus, the patron saint of the city of Zara.
