The battlement at the top points to Duke’s Gothic-style West Campus. The initials are for Duke University, the cross stands for the university’s association with the Methodist church (and is taken from the school’s seal). The 3 bars are for Trinity College, Duke’s original name
 
The motto means “study and religion” in Latin (a joke on the motto changes “et” to “est” – “study is a religion” – reflecting how hard the student work)
