Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 26, 1928 and again on August 24, 1993.

The arms are based on the older arms of the city, see below, in which the eagle of Brandenburg has been replaced by a wheel as a symbol for industry.

During DDR times the eagle of Brandenburg was removed and a cogwheel was added, see below.

The composition is already known from the 13th century seal of the city and is canting; a boar (Eber) in a forest (Wald). Eberswalde received city rights from the Counts of Brandenburg, hence the eagle.
