Einbeck was first mentioned as a city in 1203 and the local council was first mentioned in 1252. The oldest seal of the city also dates from the same time. The city gate in the arms indicate the fortifications and city rank of Einbeck. The lion is the lion of the Welfen dynasty, Dukes of Braunschweig, to which the city belonged. The waves in the base symbolise the Krumme Wasser stream that runs through the city. The many additions in the 1970 did not change the arms of the city.
