Origin/meaning

The arms were not officially granted.

The first quarter shows the arms of Sachsen, as large parts of the area were part of Sachsen-Weimar(-Eisenach). The rooster in the fourth quarter refers to the parts of the district that were historically part of the Henneberg County. The lions are the lion of Thüringen.
