Additions: 2021 Cormoret, Courtelary, Renan, Saint-Imier, Sonvilier

Wappen von Erguël/Arms (crest) of Erguël
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were adopted on April 17, 2020.

The tower is placed against a rising sun and symbolizes the new Erguël. The sun is a symbol of progress and renewal. The twelve rays refer to the 12 hours on a watch dial and refer to watchmaking.

The red star refers to the old arms of Cormoret and Saint-Imier. The green chevrons evoke the shape of a valley on the one hand, and the shape of a mountain on the other. They are intertwined to signify that there is strength in unity.

The arms were adopted after a people's vote. Two other designs were rejected:

Rejected proposal 1:

Wappen von Erguël/Coat of arms (crest) of Erguël

The sun is again a symbol of progress and renewal. The swallow here represents the qualities of the inhabitants of the region, because it is a bird that is both attached to its territory and open to the world. In addition, the swallow is threatened and protected, it symbolizes the consideration of environmental issues. The gyronny shield of twelve refers to watchmaking and industrial tradition. The blue symbolises water as the driving force behind the many mills established along the Suze, and the white symbolizes the wind turbines in the blue sky.

Rejected proposal 2:

Wappen von Erguël/Coat of arms (crest) of Erguël

The swallows have the same meaning as in the previous proposal. The yellow background symbolizes the sun and energy. In addition, the two curves refer to the Chasseral and the valley. They evoke also the rotational movement of mills, watches and wind turbines.
