Origin/meaning
The meaning of the arms is not known, but described in a legend. The arms refer to the wedding of Beatrix, daughter of the Margave of Brandenburg, with Duke Heinrich of Mecklenburg in 1298. The area, in which the town is situated, was part of the dowry. The arms were also used as the arms of the Lordship Stargard, which was also a possession of Beatrix.
The city, however, only became part of Mecklenburg in 1348 and the arms only appear in the 16th cenetury.
