Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The quartered field and red bar are taken from the arms of the Catholic Student Mission Crusade (CSMC) of which the bishop was a member. The plough is taken from the arm of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, where the bishop worked for 18 years. In addition the plough refers to the last name of the bishop, Thill for tiling the soil.
The upper half shows the pierced hand of St. Frncis of Assisi, the patron saint of the bishop. It is placed on a roundel taken from the arms of Pope Pius XI. The base shows a flaming heart, symbol of St. Augustine, the second patron of the bishop.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
