Frankenberg became a city in the middle of the 13<sup>th</sup> century. The oldest seal dates from 1249 and shows a city wall with five towers. The smaller seals, also dating from the late 13<sup>th</sup> century, show however the lion of Hessen above three canting hills (Berg).
