Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 21, 1890.

The arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop. The personal half shows in the upper part the centre part of the arms of the Collegio Teutonico (Pontifical German College) in Rome, as he was staying there for 5 years, of which one year as Rector. The lower half shows the arms of the town of Waizenkirchen, where he was born.

The bishop first applied for a different version of the personal half; with the whole arms of the college in the upper half and in the lower three wheatears for Waizenkirchen (Weizen=wheat). This proposal was rejected by the Imperial heralds, as the full arms also showed the Imperial eagle (and special permission would have been needed to used the eagle in personal arms).
