Origin/meaning

The arms above are as used as Prince-Bishop of Regensburg, with as fields : the dioceses of Regensburg-Osnabrück-Minden-Verden and as inescutcheon the arms of the Wittelsbach family, as he was the eldest son of Prince Ferdinand of Bavaria (Wittelsbach dynasty) and Maria Pettenbeckin. In 1648 he lost the diocese of Minden and Verden (both suppressed), but he kept the titles and used the arms still during his time in Regensburg.

Before being Prince-Bishop of Regensburg (a compensation for the loss of Minden and Verden) he used the arms as shown below on a coin; quartered Minden and Verden and an inescutcheon quartered Osnabrück and Bayern.
