No older seals or arms were known, so the arms were newly devised. Garching historically was a bordertown between the State of Salzburg and the Duchy of Bayern. The Alz river was the border until 1803 and the local bridge one of the few passages. <br/>This is symbolised in the arms, with in the upper half the cross for Salzburg with the red and white for Salzburg and the blue and white for Bayern.
