Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1961 and were newly devised.

The only old seal of the town from the 17th century showed a chevron with a tower and below it a lion's head. The present arms show the typical church of the city, with two smaller shields. The right shield is the arms of the Counts of Schaumburg (see Schleswig-Holstein). The left shield shows the lion of the Welfen dynasty. The village was until the first half of the 14th century a possession of the Counts of Schaumburg and afterwards of several branches of the Welfen family.
