GENERAL THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY IN NEW YORK
Country : United States
Denomination : Anglican
Official blazon
Azure, twelve cross-crosslets in saltire argent, over all a cross ermine, charged at the fess point with a mitre Or, fimbriated gules. Motto in capitals on a riband at the bottom: SERMO TUUS VERITAS EST.
Origin/meaning
The arms were adopted in 1965.
The blue shield, with its intersecting diagonal lines of silver cross-crosslets arranged in an X as is the cross of St. Andrew, is drawn after the upper left field of the arms of the Episcopal Church and indicates the official relationship of the seminary to the General Convention.
The cross-crosslets are understood to represent missionary endeavour (extending the cross in all directions), and their number (twelve) represents the number of dioceses which united to establish the seminary in 1817.
The ermine cross imposed on the shield, over-riding and extending to the borders at top, sides, and bottom, and scattered with a number of ermine tails is derived from the arms of Bishop John Henry Hobart, third Bishop of New York (1816-1830) and the seminary's principal founder.
The mitre at the centre, gold and decorated in red, indicates not only the part played in its foundation by other bishops such as Theodore Dehon and William White, but also the continuing jurisdiction over the seminary, especially over its chapel, by the House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church.
The motto, "Thy Word is Truth," is taken from the offi¬cial seal of the seminary and ultimately from John 17:17.
