GEORGE JOHN SMITH

Born: January 24, 1840
Deceased: January 18, 1918

Bishop of Argyll and the Isles, 1892-1918

Arms (crest) of George John Smith
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Argent a saltire engrailed Azure between four roses Gules slipped Vert.

Origin/meaning

The arms are probably never used by the bishop. They are listed by David McRoberts in a manuscript on all Scottish Bishops, to be published in 1978. It may be that these were attributed to the bishop by McRoberts, as there are no images known of the arms of the bishop.

The arms which McRoberts attributed to Bishop Smith are similar to those used by Alexander Smith, Coadjutor Vicar Apostolic of the Western District 1847-61 but with a saltire Azure rather than Gules.
