Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 23, 1979.

The chief refers to the Gnarrenburg castle, after which the municipality is named. The castle was situated near the water, hence the wavy chief. The base shows the merger of the 12 municipalities in 1974, in the shape of a local design.
