The arms show a city gate with two small shields; one with the chevrons of the Counts of Hanau, the other with the cross of the State of Fulda. The city was ruled jointly by the Counts of Hanau and the Bishops of Fulda at the time. The size and shape of the building has changed regularly during the centuries, and the shield were omitted in the 18<sup>th</sup> century. The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, which is known since the 14th century. The arms show a city gate with two small shields; one with the chevrons of the Counts of Hanau, the other with the cross of the State of Fulda. The city was ruled jointly by the Counts of Hanau and the Bishops of Fulda at the time. The size and shape of the building has changed regularly during the centuries, and the shield were omitted in the 18th century. In the early 20th century the old composition was restored.
