Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on December 31, 1973.

The tree is canting, guararema is the name of a tree which abounded in the region. The wavy bar represents the Paraíba rive, which flows through the city. The crosses symbolise the two chapels erected in the area in 1654. The broken chains symbolises liberty.

The shield is flanked by sugar cane and peaches, the main crops in the region.
