Escudo de ouro, imagem de Nossa Senhora com o menino, vestida de vermelho e com um manto azul, todo brocado de ouro, coroas de ouro perfiladas a negro, sobre dois ramos de oliveira a verde, frutados a negro e atados em ponta, a vermelho. A imagem acompanhada em chefe de dois escudetes a azul polvilhados de besantes de prata. Coroa mural de cinco torres de prata. Listel com as letras a negro : " GUIMARÃES ".

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on March 9, 1985.

The Kingdom of Portugal was founded in Guimarães by D. Alfonso Henriques. The arms thus show the oldest form of the Portuguese arms, the shields with the eleven coins. The patron saint of the city is St.Mary.
