Wappen von Gundelfingen an der Donau

Official blazon

In Silber ein rot gekrönter und rot gezungter schwarzer Löwe, der auf der Brust den bayerischen Rautenschild und in den Pranken einen bewurzelten grünen Baum trägt

Origin/meaning

Gundelfingen became a city around 1280, but the oldest known seal dates from around 1300. It showed the old lion of Bayern under a tree. The tree can be a canting symbol (Gundebra is a type of tree in the local dialect). From 1386 the lion is standing, holding a tree. The new arms of Bayern were added in 1462 as a small shield on the lion. As coloured arms the image is known since the 16th century. In the 19th century the tree was made a pine tree and the colours often changed. In 1955 the arms were officially granted and based on a seal from 1462 and in historical colours.
