Official blazon
English 1924: Red; a hammer and a spanner in saltire gold over wavelets blue and silver.

Motto: Vis fortibus arma.

1973: Blue; a conventional representation of an atom irradiated gold.

Origin/meaning

The First Badge from 1924 was for the 1889 Depot Ship Cruiser which become Defiance in 1931 and broken up in 1955. The Motto translates as "Strength is a weapon to the brave". The Second design from 1973 is for the Royal Nay Nuclear Propulsion Unit at Dounreay, Caithness.
