Official blazon
English Azure a three-masted schooner in full sail proper between three cinquefoils ermine. The crest is a seahorse holding a sprig vert and the supporters are dexter, a mermaid admiring herself in a glass, argent, and sinister, a sea horse with a sprig vert in its mouth. Motto: SPARSA COLLEGIT

Origin/meaning

Hamilton is named after James, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton (1589-1625). The cinquefoils are taken from his personal arms. The ship and supporters indicate the importance of the city as a harbour town and the importance of the sea in general.
