The arms are most likely based on the flag of the island, which is known since the 17th century. Helgoland was a British possession until 1890, when it was exchanged for Zanzibar (on the east coast of Africa). The seal of the island has always shown St. Nicholas, the patron saint of the sailors. The arms were already used as such in the late 19th century, but are not recorded at the College of Arms in London.

The three lanes are explained with the following verse :
"Grün ist das Land, rot ist die Kant, weiss ist der Sand, das sind die Farben von Helgoland." (Green is the land, red are the cliffs, white is the sand, these are the colours of Helgoland)
