Origin/meaning

The figures placed in each of quarters of the shield are taken from the arms or flags of the four departments that make up the diocese.

The flower of the passionflower is taken from the flag of the department of Paysandú. Its symbolism refers to the passion of the Lord.

The bird is taken from the arms of the department of Artigas. It is a symbol of vigilance. "Take care of yourselves and of all the flock, in the midst of which the Holy Spirit has placed you as watchmen to shepherd the Church of God, which he purchased with the blood of his own son" (Acts 20:28).

The ear of wheat is taken from the arms of Río Negro, the bishop's native soil, makes the Eucharist present. "Truly, truly, I say to you: if the grain of wheat does not fall to the ground and it dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit "(Jn 12,24).

The fourth quarter is taken from the arms of the Department of Salto. It makes present the water of baptism, and the river Uruguay, which gives its name to the country, bathes the four departments of the diocese, and links the diocese and the country with the region of the old Jesuit Missions. "Jesus stood up and cried out: 'If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and let him who believes in me drink', as the Scripture says: From her bosom will flow rivers of living water. This he said, referring to the Spirit that those who believed in him would receive "(Jn 7,37-39).

The inescutcheon shows the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with its flame of living love, the crown of thorns and the mark of the spear of the soldier. The heart, in the biblical language is the center of the person. Located in the center of the shield, and superimposed on the other figures, the heart of Jesus reiterates its call to the men and women of the entire diocese: "Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Load with my yoke, and learn from me, that I am meek and humble of heart; and they will find rest for their souls. Because my yoke is soft and my burden light "(Mt 11,30). To the Sacred Heart are dedicated the parish of Young, place of birth of the bishop, and one of the parishes of Paysandú, in which he was parish priest at the time of his appointment.

The motto Nada es imposible para Dios (Nothing is impossible for God; Luke 1:37) is taken from the passage of the Annunciation. These are the words that the angel Gabriel addresses to Mary, to encourage her to trust in God and to put herself at the service of her project of Salvation as the mother of her son Jesus.
