The arms were granted on October 15, 1912 and again on June 14, 1988. | |||
The arms are identical to the arms of the oldest known Lords of Herzele, in 1282 a Walter was mentioned as Lord of Herzele. The family held the estate until the early 16<sup>th</sup> century when they were succeeded (through marriage) by other families. The arms are known since the 14<sup>th</sup> century for the family. Th municipality used the arms with helmet and crest, which were never officially granted. | |||
The Van Herzele family also owned, through marriage, the estate of [[Heer Oudelands Ambacht]] in the Netherlands, which used the same arms. | |||
