Origin/meaning

The city was founded in the 13th century by the Counts of Schaumburg. Until the 16th century the seals of the city thus show the nettle-leaf of the arms of the Counts of Schaumburg. In the seals from the 16th and 17th century the chief with the stars was added. These are most likely derived from the arms of the Lordship Sternberg, which was acquired by the Counts of Sternberg in 1377. The transfer to Hessen in 1647 did not change the arms, which thus have never changed.
