HOME AIRCRAFT DEPOT, ROYAL AIR FORCE

History: Formed as No 5 Aera Area Depot in 1918, in 1920 renamed as Inland Aerea Aircraft Depot. Becoming the Home Aircraft Depot in 1926.In 1938 the Depot become No 13 Maintenance Unit remaining so until 1948.

English On amount a dragon vert armed and langued gules, supporting a tower fracted argent, its dexter hind leg resting on a mill-rind Or.

Motto: Labor arma ministrat.

Origin/meaning

The Dragon refers to the personnel of the Unit returning damaged Aircraft to their proper positions (indicated by the Broken Tower) whilst the Mill-Rind represents the Grindstones used in the Workshops. The Motto translates as "Hard work supplies arms". The Badge was approved in October 1945 and on 14 February 1968 the Badge was taken over by RAF Station Henlow.
