Origin/meaning

The old arms, above left, were granted on May 6, 1846; the present arms on January 27, 1926.

The arms show St. Pirminius (Sankt Pirmin), who founded the village and the local monastery in the 8th century, and who was buried in the monastery in 753. The oldest seal of the village dates from 1456 and shows the torso of the saint. A later 15th century seal showed the complete saint standing and holding an open book. Until 1790 the local seals all showed this composition. In 1846 the village was granted arms based on these latter seals, but in 1926 the image of the oldest seal was granted as village arms.
