Origin/meaning

Hoya received town rights in the early 14th century and the oldest seals date from the same time. The seals showed the two bear claws of the Counts of Hoya (see the district arms). After 1400 the seals showed a castle with a small shield, showing the bear claws. Even though the size and shape of the castle and claws changed considerably during the centuries, the composition as such remained the same.
