Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 1, 1985.

The arms combine the three besants from Ichtegem and Eernegem, with an escutcheon for Bekegem. Bekegem had no arms, so as a symbol the arms of the Gistel region were chosen, as the village historically belonged to that region.

The previous arms were granted on November 10 1819 and confirmed on August 31, 1838.

The arms are derived from the arms of the Lords of Koekelare, who used three besants in their arms. The letter I in the chief was added to differentiate the arms of the other villages in the Koekelare estate, Koekelare and Eernegem.
