INVERNESS-SHIRE (County Council)

Incorporated into: 1975 Highland Region (1996 Highland Area Council)

Invernessc.jpg

Official blazon

Azure, in dexter chief a stag's head and in sinister chief a hull's head both erased, and in base a galley, sails furled, oars in action, and flagged, all Or.

And in an Escrol under the Shield this Motto "Air Son Math Na Siorrachd".

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 10, 1927.

The arms show a galley, which represents the Clan Chattan, a confederation of clans led by the Mackintosh clan. The clan Chattan were allies to the Lords of the Isles, who used a ship on their arms.

The stag's head and bull's head are taken from the crests of two important clans in the area, the Fraser of Lovat and the MacLeods of MacLeod respectively.
