Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on April 26, 1935.

The arms show in the upper part the horse of Westfalen, and in the lower part the arms of the former rulers in the district. The cross is the arms of the State of Köln, who owned the area around Menden. The middle arms are the arms of the County Mark, which included Schwerte, Hemer, and Iserlohn city in the district.

The lion is the lion of the Counts of Limburg, who owned Hohenlimburg until 1459.
